Dumbo Apartment
Within a converted loft building in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood, SJA joined two adjacent apartments to create an expanded home for a family of five. To accommodate the needs of their family, the clients, who had resided in a corner unit of the building, acquired the sizable one-bedroom next door. Working within the context of the dated and disjointed spaces, SJA focused on connecting the two units while preserving a sense of privacy between zones in the home. The newly acquired one-bedroom unit was transformed into a vibrant kid area. Around two existing bathrooms, SJA reorganized the space to include three bedrooms and a sitting area dedicated solely to the children. Each dynamic bedroom embraces playful patterns–Brooklyn toile wallpaper, animal print rugs, floral window shades–to create lively yet sophisticated spaces. In the two renovated bathrooms, playful tiles from Concrete Collaborative complement sculptural sconces from In Common With. A bold blue hue coats the connecting sitting room where board games and toys can be stored in custom, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.
